Chapter Nineteen

The bath Anji had given him overtook his senses. When he awoke, she was pacing at the end of the tub, fully dressed, and mumbling into the phone. Her worried look caught his attention, and he wondered who could have her upset. If he didn’t know better, he would have thought she was on the phone with a man. Her motions and gestures seemed to defend herself, to over express her regret.

He moved a little, splashing the water; it was still warm. She must have been pouring in hot water while he slept. The tub was a stand alone with faucets pouring water from two huge, golden lions mouths. Titan remembered raising hell when he had come over and found her wearing a wife-beater T-shirt and a short jean jumper while busting up the tile floor with a huge mallet. Even now he had to fight the urge to burst out laughing, thinking about how he had shouted that she was losing her damn mind. Who would tear up a perfectly good bathroom to install an old-ass, claw-footed tub in the middle of the damn room? That was some white folks’ shit.

That’s how Anji was, though. The hood didn’t define her in any way. She was an artist through and through. She had worked on the bathroom for weeks. It was one of the few times he came over every night. He was fascinated by a woman who would watch an HGTV DVD over and over again and turn a nice bathroom into a sexy paradise. Now the tub had contraptions and a chain release to let water ease out while fresh warm water poured in. With the candles, scented water, and plush rug, Titan felt like a king soaking in a royal vat. Anji was the shit.

Titan leaned back on the bath pillow and kept his eyes on her swaying hips. How many women thought to do that, thought to keep their man’s bath warm while he rested? Titan realized that part of the reason he was paranoid was because Anji was a good catch. The thought of her with another man made him feel crazy. It was time to seriously think about her role in his life and how to make her more official.

Titan imagined his mother, Deaconess Anderson, staring at Anji’s dyed locks with disdain, eyeing her pierced tongue, and her extra weight in disgust. His mother was the head deaconess at their Baptist church. There was no way Deaconess Anderson was showing Anji off to any of her constituents. He smiled inwardly, thinking of all the hell his mother could bring to Anji’s life. Deaconess Anderson was the head hypocrite of them all.

But Titan loved his mother, loved putting money in her hand every week. Still, he never could figure out how all that church dedication, pomp, and circumstance on Sunday didn’t amount to much of anything outside of church during the week. He couldn’t understand how she didn’t mind taking and spending the dirty money he put in her hand each week, knowing full well how he had earned it.
